The Public Health Advocacy Institute (PHAI) has named Dr. Matt Gaskell as its inaugural International Consultant on Gambling Policy. The appointment was announced on July 20, 2026, to expand the Boston-based organization’s regulatory oversight of the commercial gambling sector.
PHAI operates as a non-profit legal research center housed at the Northeastern University School of Law in Massachusetts. The institute focuses on public health improvements through civil justice mechanisms. Gaskell’s new position integrates his clinical and policy expertise into the organization’s ongoing legal and regulatory initiatives.
Professional Background and Team Integration
Dr. Gaskell currently directs gambling harm clinics across the north of England and serves on the World Health Organisation’s Expert Group on Gambling. He brings established experience in harm prevention, treatment frameworks, and industry regulation.
Regarding the new role, Gaskell stated: "I am honoured to join PHAI and bring my expertise to protecting the public from the unacceptable harms associated with the modern commercial gambling industry and its sports partners."
The consultant will collaborate with PHAI leadership, including Dr. Richard Daynard, Professor Mark Gottlieb, and Dr. Harry Levant.
Gaskell noted his intention to apply strategic planning to the institute’s upcoming projects. The announcement was published by Richard Hollis on July 20, 2026.
